Be Strong. Be Fit. Be Free.
Sport-Specific Strength & Conditioning for Adult, Masters & Senior Athletes
Most adults are more capable than they realize.
My work unlocks your capability into performance.
Welcome to...
BERTGES STRENGTH™
I train and compete in Purple Chucks
and have for years.
They’re simple, honest, durable — and they reflect
how I think about coaching and what it means to build
athletic performance, not just for today, but for the long haul.
Every day begins with the same question: " do I lace up and go,
or do I skip"?
That moment, the moment before the laces tighten,
is where identity is shaped.
Lacing up starts the run, the gym session, the drills.
Even on the days we don’t feel like it, we show up.
Within ten minutes we know whether today
is a green light or a day to back off.
Either way, we showed up. We listened. We learned.
We left something in the bank.
These flat, minimal shoes remind me that it’s the engine that drives performance, not the chassis. Tools matter — but identity matters more. Over the years, I’ve watched something remarkable happen in clients who commit to the long arc: fear becomes courage, doubt becomes identity, effort becomes self‑respect.
There’s a moment when an athlete stops asking, “Can I do this?” and starts saying,
“This is who I am.”
We’ve all trained in storms, heat, cold, rain, and smoke. We know what self doubt feels like, but we overcome this feeling. We are tenacious. We’re prepared. We play the cards we’re dealt. Once in a while we get perfect conditions — but we don’t count on them.
When the day is perfect, it’s a gift.
When it’s not, we discover who we’ve become.
" Training with Steve my confidence returned, and my commitment developed into a way of life, event at 65"-Motorcylist.
I coach identity driven adults
whose participation in sport, recreation, or leadership defines them; adults who want to feel strong, capable, and emotionally balanced under load.
They pursue challenge, show up when they don’t feel like it, and carry weight willingly. They want capacity, not comfort — meaning, not metrics — and they want to become someone worthy of the demands they choose.
My work is to help them become Strong, Fit, and Free.
Strong is capability — the ability to carry what matters. Fit is readiness — the ability to meet the day with clarity and confidence. Free is agency — the ability to choose your path without fear.
These are not fitness outcomes.
They are identity outcomes.
Identity is nothing more, and nothing less, than becoming the change you want to see — the internal shift that makes improvement inevitable.
"Steve is driven to be his best and inspires others to seek the same."

Your Potential Deserves a Plan.
Improvement doesn't happen by intention alone. It requires structure, purposeful training, and the ability to recognize what works and refine what doesn't.
That's the purpose of the Athlete Capacity Plan.
More than a training schedule, it's a structured coaching relationship designed to make improvement a predictable consequence of preparation.
It is a deliverable, a living document, and a long-range map. Your history, your sport, your constraints, your strengths, and your ambitions shape the plan.
No templates. No recycled programming.
This is your arc.
Developing Capacity. Expressing Capacity.
Within the Athlete Capacity Plan, we distinguish between developing strength and expressing strength.
Developing strength is the disciplined construction of capability. Expressing strength is the moment you call upon that capability under pressure—in competition, in uncertainty, in the moments that matter.
Many athletes train primarily for expression. Many programs chase numbers. But long-term performance comes from developing capacity first, then expressing it when the demands require it.
This is how capacity becomes confidence.
The Athlete Capacity Plan reveals what has shifted, what has strengthened, and what has become possible.
Together, we write a history of adaptations, not a journal of workouts.
We build capacity that lasts—capacity that carries into sport, recreation, and life.

Metrics & Measurement guide
clarity for performance.
You can’t know where you’re going until you
know where you’re starting. Baselines matter. Diagnostics matter. Measurement keeps us honest, keeps us on track, and reveals what’s changing.
But numbers are not identity, they are signals. You are always more than the metrics, even as the metrics help guide the work.
I learned this training for my first Ironman Triathlon. I prepared for the distance and duration: the objective numbers. For my second Ironman competition, I trained for wind, hills, chop, and heat: the unknowns that require capacity above and beyond the plan. The 2nd Ironman was faster.
Every adult who performs under pressure faces their own wind, hills, chop, and heat.
Chaos is the proving ground.
Capacity is the response.
